THEKKADY-EASTERN GATEWAY TO KERALA

Thekkady (Idukki district) is the location of the Periyar National Park, which is an important tourist attraction in the Kerala state of India. Thekkady enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. The temperature drops to 13 degree Celsius during December/January and rises to 30 degree Celsius during April/May. Thekkady is one of the important tourist destinations in India. It is located at a distance of about 160 miles from Thiruvananthapuram and is well known for wildlife preservation.

The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice-scented plantations. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs. Thekkady is also known as the eastern gateway to Kerala – God’s Own Country and is vastly popular on the tourist map of India for it is full of dense green vegetation, heady scents of spices, panoramic view, lakes, evergreen forests, herds of elephants and birds. Unlike other wildlife sanctuaries located in India, Thekkady features a wide diversity of rich flora, fauna and a huge variety of birds.
