Wayanad District in the north-east of Kerala, India, was formed on 1 November 1980 as the 12th district by carving out areas from Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Kalpetta is the district headquarters as well as the only municipal town in the district. The region was known as Mayakshetra (Maya's land) in the earliest records. Mayakshetra evolved into Mayanad and finally to Wayanad, a 600 km stretch of lush green hills along the lofty Western Ghats, is a UNESCO World Heritage spot. Meenmutty waterfalls
Meenmutty falls is among the best and gorgeous falls in Wayanad Kalpetta. Wayanad comprises of some of the beautiful falls in Kerala. The must visit falls in Wayanad are the Meenmutty Falls, the Kanthampuram Falls, and the Suchipara Falls. Meenmutty falls is 29 kilometre far from the Wayanad Kalpetta. The Meenmutty word says it is where fish gets blocked. Meenmutty is a combination of Malayalam words Meen (fish) and Mutty (blocked). Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike through the jungle from the main Ooty Road.
Chembra Peak
Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) above sea level. Chembra is located near the town of Meppady and is 8 km south of Kalpetta. It is part of the Wayanad hill ranges in Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamilnadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. Apart from this, the town of Kalpetta and most parts of Wayanad district too are visible. The varying topography of the district which includes hills, rocks and valleys can be enjoyed the most from Chembra peak and you can also observe the silver linings of streams among the thick greenery.
